Meditation And Mindfulness:
Practical, Powerful, Useful Steps To Serenity
Most of my life I used to think others knew more than I did. I hadn’t learned yet how to trust my own inner wisdom. Even after sitting with many spiritual teachers and deepening all the time, something was still missing. I kept looking to them for answers. I hadn’t found the one teacher that was the right one for me yet; the one who gave me the peace and clarity I longed for, yet kept eluding me. Not surprisingly, it was my own wise and beautiful Heart, Being and Body that ended up giving me what I couldn’t find anywhere else. My Body’s Wisdom, my Being’s Guidance and my Heart’s Longing showed me the way and have become my six simple steps to reach serenity. All the teachers and teachings pointed to That, yet I had to figure out my own way and style to start embodying it.
This serenity is already inside each one of us just waiting for us to receive it. It’s the turmoil that fills this serenity that keeps us distracted and infatuated and at arms length of what we long for.
There are six areas that I found important to bring your attention to if you want peace and fulfillment in your life. If not addressed, your view gets cluttered and blocks your goal. It’s too easy to get lost in the first three areas until you are found in the last three.
Meditation And The Body
Most of us are completely out of touch with our bodies, except when we feel the physiological sensations and impulses of hunger, pain, tiredness, arousal or stress. There are so many other sensations in the body that are ignored and suppressed in favor of the mind’s or other people’s opinions. We all have access to our internal GPS (God’s Positioning System) that teaches us how to be present and alert inside to this natural guidance system. When you learn to interpret these senses in your body, you become mindful in many areas of your life. Your body is the perfect instrument to give you the feed back and guidance you need at any moment. In this first meditation we start with moving from the mind into the body and experience what it’s actually like in there when we pay attention to it.
Meditation And Thoughts
Thinking is one of the biggest addictions on the planet. If there were a TA (Thinking Anonymous), we should all go through the steps to recover from erroneous thinking. It’s important to realize how seductive and believable your thoughts are as long as they remain unconscious. Mindfulness will help make your thoughts conscious. That way you create a gap between you and them and realize you have a choice to believe them or not.
Do ‘they’ pull you in first, or can you become mindful enough to observe them before they pull you into mindlessness? Can you choose if you want to engage with them or not? It’s like freeing up your energy that was stuck in a thought and now you have the freedom to focus on what really matters to you instead.
Meditation And Feelings
Most of us are completely out of touch with our feelings and don’t even know how to access them. In this meditation we are going to look at your feelings and feel into them. So often unconscious Feelings in the body keep you from experiencing the peace and joy and harmony that we all long for.
You may have heard the saying: What you resist persists. Well, I have another one for you. It says: WHAT YOU SUPPRESS, CAUSES YOU STRESS.
So if you feel stress (and who doesn’t!) let’s find out which feelings want your attention. We are all so conditioned to suppress them for various reasons. You may not feel OK about them, they may not be appropriate, or they were simply never allowed when you grew up. Any feelings that are suppressed cause a lot of stress in the body and mind. There is even evidence that they can be the cause of dis-ease. Let’s change that by making them conscious and give you an opportunity to transform and heal them
Meditation And The Longing Of The Heart
Underneath all our feelings, thoughts and body sensations runs a current that guides and informs us through the longing of our Heart. I call this longing the mouthpiece of the Divine and it’s well worth learning It’s language.
It’s not really separate from your body, your needs and feelings. They all seem to work together to help you steer clear of the debris you may find yourself in. You can learn to open yourself up to be guided by Spirit through your Heart. The more you listen, you more you’ll feel your Heart opening and reveal your purpose and fulfillment here on earth. It is not an accident or mistake that you feel this deep longing inside. It is what you came here for.
Meditation And The Art Of Allowing
It can be daunting to realize how much you’ve been going in the opposite direction of how you really want to live your life, and how you’ve resisted what deeply matters to you. Learning to Allow your body, your thoughts, your feelings and your longings to just be instead of resisting or suppressing them liberates a lot of energy. You turn a tight fist of resistance into an open hand of Allowing and realize unlimited potential in the palm of your hand. When your mind is freed up from being embedded in thinking, you can finally turn your attention to Who you really Are and always have been. Now it gets interesting:
Meditation And ‘Who Am I?’
Who Are You without the distractions from your body, emotions and thoughts? You will find the answer in the Space you have access to now with your freed up energy. It is in the Space of Allowing that you can direct your awareness back on itself. Who Am I, when I am not identified with ‘what I am aware of?’ Who Am I, when I am curious about this open Space free from distractions? Who Am I as pure ‘I’? We say ‘I’ ‘I’ ‘I’ all day long and put something behind it. What is left when ‘I’ stands on it own?
The answer is found in the spaciousness of Allowing when you allow this ‘I’ to reveal itself to you. Don’t go hunting it down. Let it come to you, just like an animal comes to you, when you just sit and wait with an open hand and Heart.
