The Improv of Life
Dear Friend,
Today is an experiment to just sit down and see what comes out of and from the keypad without having any idea what to write about. Let’s call it improv-writing. It reminds me of a time when I took some improv classes years ago. I am up on stage in a small group and the instructor gives us a theme, and then we have to create a little play out of thin air relating to the theme. It is hugely funny.
Life itself, of course is one big improv scene. In the improv of life we create stories and scenarios out of thin air all the time. Good ones, bad ones, dramas, romances, funny ones and sad ones. In our daily life we have not rehearsed them, but we act them quite powerfully as if we had spent a long time rehearsing to make them look so believable. It is not always hugely funny.
Is it true, though that we have not rehearsed them?
In a way we rehearse these stories all the time … in our minds. We spin them up and spit them out repeatedly and create amazing dramas and thrillers on life’s stage all day long. The only difference between doing it in an improv class and in real life is that we believe our own stories in real life. On stage we know we are having fun and playing with each other. We are conscious of what we are doing and can stop it at any time.
In life, it is a different ‘story’, isn’t it. We are unconscious of what we are doing and cannot stop it at any time … until it becomes conscious. It always comes back to this: Make the unconscious conscious and your life can change. The things we commit to unconsciously are different then when they have become conscious. Unconscious commitments cause a lot of suffering. Conscious commitments have the potential to create a lot of joy and freedom.
Even though this little piece of writing is coming out of thin air, I am aware of what I am doing and can stop at any time, so I must be doing it consciously. And for some unknown reason the subject ends up being about commitment again. It must be in the ‘thin’ air. When our dramas are done unconsciously, we need to make them conscious first. Then we can choose what we want to do instead. If you still like drama, you can act it out on a stage and make it a comic-relief-type-drama. When we are not being run by unconscious thoughts and beliefs, we have the freedom and capacity to choose what we want to commit our beautiful life to.
What would you like your life to be about?
ALL Love,
Pernilla
