Wearing Your True Colors for Halloween
Dear Friend,
What are you going to wear for Halloween?
Halloween is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween.
(To hallow is “to make holy or sacred, to sanctify or consecrate”)
That night, the veil is said to be the thinnest between the visible and invisible worlds, the living and the dead.
To me it sounds like such a wonderful opportunity to peak through the veil and get a good glimpse of who you really are – what is holy and sacred.
Today, like so many other holidays with roots in ancients rituals and traditions, Halloween has lost its true meaning and has become commercialized instead.
That does not mean we shouldn’t enjoy it and take time out to play.
When the veil is the thinnest
However, when the veil is the thinnest, we actually have a chance to see through the seductive colors of the veil into the sacred.
I think this is a great follow up from last week’s post where we talked about being undressed and start weaving the garments from within, made up of the qualities of our True Being.
What would you wear when you are Being your natural YOU?
What do you wear when you are Being your Self?
Even behind a costume looking like a witch, devil or otherworldly monster on this ‘scary night’, or behind your more familiar costume looking like unloved, not good enough, separate or victimhood on a regular day, how can your True Colors shine through all that?
Being your Self
Years ago, when I still lived in Denmark, we had a Carnival (Rio style) for 3 days and nights in a row. People were dressed up for 3 days and Copenhagen was a big party.
I remember dressing up at home and getting on the train to downtown Copenhagen. It was amazing. It felt like I entered a dream world where everybody behaved differently: People were happy, more relaxed, they danced, and…. talked with each other. There was a connectedness between us all, and I felt I could be more myself. In those days I wore a daily costume called shy and self doubt, and wearing this new costume (covering my daily costume), somehow made me feel more secure and open to talk and connect with strangers and have a wonderful time.
It made an impression on me and made me aware how hard it was in my daily life to just Be myself and feel OK. Hiding behind a costume, made it so much easier.
Now, I am all for dressing up on Halloween and having fun. If you are in Santa Cruz, you will probably find me out there in my elf costume 🙂 But not to cover up another costume in order to be myself anymore.
I want to invite us all to wear our True Colors, even in a costume, and Be OK with who we are as we slowly leave the veil of illusion and pretense behind and share our true beauty, authenticity and vulnerability with each other.
What are you going to wear?
Happy Halloween.
And please join me on my radio show this Tuesday, where my guest Michelle Manning-Kogler will use her Quantum Soul Healing Gift to help us clear some of the old garments to make room for the new…
