Getting Out of Your Own Way Tip #6
Resistance is one of my favorite subjects because it is the linchpin that holds our whole false identity together.
- the one that gets in the way of the Divine Feminine Flow
- the one that doesn’t even exist except to the extend that you resist it
- the one you have come to believe yourSelf to Be
In my book Imagine Being Kind to YourSelf I wrote: “When you resist any part of your dream character, it only means that you believe you are him or her. However, when you learn to just allow the experience of the dream character to be there, you can wake up from the dream and realize you are not him or her, and transformation happens quite naturally by itself.”
I have written and talked so much about how resistance keeps anything and everything we want to get rid of in place. Resisting something will make sure it will never go away! It does the opposite of what we want, yet somehow most of us keep hoping that one day …
Well, it won’t. Remember from Getting out of your own way Tip #3 that “Where you place your attention is where your energy goes?”
Resistance gets a lot of attention, even though it may be unconscious! Conscious or unconscious, from an energetic level, what you resist persists because you give it your energy. So this energy gets bound up in what you don’t want and the more you resist it, the bigger it gets. Resistance is a heavy duty meal. How often do you feed this ‘animal?’
Building Blocks For A Strong Foundation
It is my intention to create a foundation and understanding of what we are resisting and why. The previous posts under Getting Out of Your Own Way are the building blocks for this foundation. Understanding our innocence in the sponge analogy in Tip #2 will help you feel more compassion for the accumulation of layers of identity that we all have come to believe are us! We think that this little dream character is who we are and we put all our energy into resisting the ‘little guy’ because we don’t like what we have created – with our own resistance!
Why, Oh Why?
I wrote in depth about resistance in a blog post a while ago called Why we have resistance – and what we can do about it and rather than repeating myself, I encourage you to read it.
Resistance is a BIG boulder in the Flow of Life and will disappear when you move from resisting to allowing. The principles we are touching on in all these posts are really the same. It’s not all that complicated to get out of our own way, it’s just not so easy! and most of us are not so willing to give that up.
Love YourSelf
It clearly comes down to being Willing to learn to Love yourSelf – deeply from the inside out. We are not talking bubble baths here. Self Love may very well include bubble baths, but in themselves they are not enough to change these inherent programs we all have innocently learned and are now repeating daily. Because we keep putting our energy into what we don’t want by resisting it, we are likely to run into Groundhog day until we stop resisting. It’s the future repeating the past when we are stuck in energetic patterns like resistance.
Paying Attention To The Resistance
We first need to bring awareness to our own resistance and how that is experienced in our own body.
You may feel it as tension, hardness, shallow breathing, tight jaws, shut down feeling, or anger and frustration towards yourself.
Just to make sure that you don’t get confused about bringing your attention to this ‘problem area’ when we just recently talked about ‘where our attention goes, energy flows,’ I’d like to add this: When we do it consciously we do so in order to release the energy that is stuck there unconsciously because our attention has been parked there 24/7. Once we do it consciously, we create Space, see new ways and choices and can start backing out. However, while we do it unconsciously we miss all the ways we can do Life differently.
I would like to invite you to notice what you are resisting in your life, inside or out. Inside is most likely something about yourself that you don’t want to experience, and outside is likely an event, a person or an experience that makes you feel uncomfortable. So in reality, they are both inner experiences you don’t like, which is why you resist them. In the Blame Game post, we mentioned that when you notice you are blaming something/someone outside of you, get curious to see it as a mirror, so you can find its reflection inside of you. Let’s practice that muscle again and strengthen our ability to turn our attention inward to Feel what is going on inside when …………(fill in the blank) happens.
Feel inside your body where this resistance is felt and if you can meet that resistance with a Hello and curiosity.
It’s all an inside job and step by step, tip by tip we are realizing how we are the creators of our own boulders in the Divine Feminine Flow and how we can also uncreate them once we see them.
Tip #6:
What Are You Resisting In Your Life?
FEEL the FEELING in the body that doesn’t FEEL good. Just try it. Be willing to pause – stop – breathe and say Hello to it.
I know you can do this.
Please share your insights with me. I love hearing from you.
If you feel a little lost amongst all these boulders and need a little help, you can always sign up with me for a free Discovery Session, where we spend 30 min on zoom helping you see more clearly where you are now (parked your attention) and where you would like hang out instead, and then of course uncovering what gets in your way of your new hangout. It’s just another boulder and I honestly can say, that I wouldn’t Be who I am today without plenty of support along the way. You can learn more about my work as a Self Love Mystic and Mentor at DivineFeminine Flow and if you feel ready just go here to sign up for a free 30 min discovery sessions.

Dear Pernilla, WOW, another fabulous posting! Getting Out of Your Own Way is such a wonderful and powerful topic. What comes to mind for me, is that many of us are afraid of our own power I believe. I had this conversation with a friend of mine this week with whom I’ve done a number of radio programs. We both decided that we had been playing tooooo small! MMM why would be do that? Perhaps there is still a small voice within saying, “Who do you think you are, wanting to do THAT!” Thanks so much for your blog. This is a powerful topic!

Yes, Sharon, that topic is coming up as one of the next posts. You are right on track here. It’s a biggie and one I am meeting inside with a Hello these days. I need a lot of time in Silence, conversation and Love with this part. It’s scary to show up as the Divine in a world where it is still no accepted.
Hey, we’re doing it anyway, aren’t we?
Stay tuned…

I can tell when I’m in resistance because it feels like my inner 2-year old is having a temper tantrum and screaming “I don’t wanna! I don’t wanna!” Getting past the resistance requires surrender, but it isn’t always pretty, or very grown up feeling. Sometimes its that 2-year old again, this time saying, “OK, fine!” as she gives up the fight.

Great you are in touch with that 2 year old. That is where it all starts: awareness.
Some of them are much more subtle and don’t even have a voice.
It’s so automatic, isn’t it, as if resistance came with the package when we were born 🙂

Beautiful tips, Pernilla! It’s so hard to become aware of these resistance moments and it’s so easy to react on them without pausing to reflect.
I will definitely try to “say hello” to resistance next time I become aware of it – I’m sure it’ll open a new world I did not know it existed 🙂

Thanks for giving it a shot, Delia. Yes resistance is so ingrained that we barely notice we are doing it – only the effects of it, which is feeling miserable. It really is life changing on all levels when we open the door of resistance and allow the Flow of Life come through.

I like how you advise that we stay open and curious to our resistance. Curiosity just feels so much gentler than ignoring or avoiding what I don’t want to do or look at. Everything just feels better when I’m curious instead of going into a critical mode with myself. Thanks Pernilla.

It’s hard to stay open when we’ve been so conditioned to shut down and hide who we truly are. I think curiosity is such a beautiful virtue and tool to open up and dissolve all the places we want to hide or get rid of.
It feels like a U-ey when you do that, doesn’t it 🙂
